Things to See and Do

Welcome to São Paulo and welcome to Brasil! Brasilians have a special word, "Saudades". It doesn't translate perfectly to English, but it roughly means deep nostalgic feelings of longing for the places and experiences of home, warmth, and generally the Brasilian culture. For Brasilians, memories of an intense football (soccer) match, the sound of a guitar playing Samba at the beach, or an all-day barbecue with family and friends can all evoke Saudades. We hope that in your time here you can make great memories and share in experiences that will also give you Saudades.

For those traveling from far away, we encourage you to take some time to explore and experience São Paulo, and if you have time, other parts of Brasil. We are happy to offer some recommendations:

- Take part in a traditional Brasilian churrasco (barbecue) - If you are staying through the weekend we are hosting one and would love if you could join!

- Take a walk along Avenida Paulista, the commercial heart of São Paulo.

- Historic city center: seeing the Catedral da Sé de São Paulo and getting a mortadella sandwich at the Mercado Municipal are classic.

- Go to a Pagode (very popular in the Vila Madalena neighborhood); more than just a music style, these are (usually small) live music events meant to be enjoyed with beer and friends.

- São Paulo has an amazing food scene, both international cuisine and local fare. Macaxeira Itaim (which specializes in spicy food from Northern Brasil) and D.O.M. (a two Michelin star restaurant which uses uniquely Brasilian ingredients) are worth going out of the way to visit. We are happy to recommend options in the area you are staying.
